This section is for deals, inside scoops, and psycho bable B.S. that you really didn't know you needed to know.
Nic Summers is a UAL Dispatcher who has a wonderful collection of UAL jet photos. Check out his site... not only will you see some beautiful airplane photos, but you just might find a nice gift for someone.
If you are in the market for a computer or peripherals, I HIGHLY recommend you check out GotApex.com. Thanks to Craig Linde (spending his LOA in Vegas), this has been one of the best sites I've run across on the internet, period. It is basically like PilotsUnited.com but for computers. What I mean by that is that the site is free, simple, and very helpful. From what I gather, the guy gets some residual income from some small advertisements/banner ads, but they don't dominate the site. Most of the incredible computer system deals are Dells, but I have seen Gateways and other brands on there.
I recently purchased a DELL 2.2 GHz P4, 128 RAM, 30 GB Hard Drive, DVD-R/CD-RW for $399 with FREE shipping. (I upgraded to 256 RAM and added a second CD player for something like $100 total). This is almost the system I was running downstairs and had purchased 18 months ago for around $2000. There are sweet deals on monitors, printers, and other peripherals. Definitely check out GotApex.com.
UPDATE:
The new FTC NATIONAL "Do Not Call" registry IS HERE! It is a very simple process to go to the site and add yourself on the list. You register with the FTC either by computer or by phone for FREE, and you're on the list for five years. Every three months, ALL telemarketers have to check and update their list. If your number is on the registry, they MUST delete your number. If they still call you, you then call another FTC number to report them, and they will be investigated and fined $1,000 per call. The investigation and fine is nothing new, by the way. Right now if you tell a specific telemarketer that you want to be put on their do not call list and that same company calls you back, you can call that FTC number and have them investigated and possibly fined. But when you put yourself on the National Registry list, it means that you are on EVERY telemarketers do not call list. In theory, this should cut your telemarketing calls to 0. Realistically, it should significant'ly reduce the number of telemarketing calls you get.
If you wanna be even more proactive, there is a $40 product called the Telezapper that senses if the call is from a computer and then sends a signal to the computer saying your number is disconnected so that the computer deletes your number from their system. In line with all the conspiracy theories out there, I believe that the Telezapper company has put me on a dang list that calls my house 15-20 times a until I buy the dang device. Well, it's working on me.
If for the really adventurous, there is a guy on ebay that is selling a .wav file that contains the tones that the Telezapper II uses. It's only 99 cents. You play it on your computer speakers to record it to your answering machine or voice mail just before you speak your message. In theory, this does the exact same thing as the Telezapper II. If you go to the auction, it will explain it all in great detail. And from pilot Tim O'Neill, here's another great source.
Whew, we're getting so many lists (all of 4) that we had to make a list of our lists. We call it, er, the PilotsUnited.com List of Lists. And no, "Things You'd Do With Goodwin's Head if it Were Separated From His Body" is not one of the lists. The latest two are the "LAS Commuters" and the "Aero Medical Examiners" lists. Go to the List of List page for both the lists and the method to get your data on the lists.
Pilots Helping Pilots: If you are selling a home or buying a house to live in or invest in, then please check out the PilotsUnited Real Estate Referral List. The list is for United Pilots who are also Real Estate Agents or Mortgage Brokers. (Spouses of United Pilots are also on the list, and are indicated as such.) All the contact information is available on the page (please either tell them that you located them via the PilotsUnited website, or contact me and let me refer you to them personally.) If you're a pilot and an agent or broker, email me to get on the list!
HEY! What's that code from Microsoft that want's to download onto my machine? MSN Money has updated the ticker. The two biggest features are that the quotes are now color coded (green for going up, red for going down) and now when you click on the quote, it actually goes to the quote page instead of an error page. (If you said NO to downloading the code, it will prompt you the next time you come to PilotsUnited ULTRA, and you can accept it then. If you don't want to accept it, just use the PilotsUnited Standard at www.PilotsUnited.com.)
Also added to the PilotsUnited ULTRA site are the Stock Quotes and Charts, where you type in the stock symbol and it goes right to the MSN Money Quote or Chart page. (Look to the right, down below the UAL Stock Chart) The default is to go to UAL, but you can type any symbol over it. Maybe NOW my best friend, Steve Smolek, will actually use this site as his home page instead of MSN! Thanks to Brett Nolastname for sending in the link to the new code! Cheers!
There are two sites, www.Naughtycodes.com and www.currentcodes.com that will give you the all the promotional codes to use when ordering products from dozens of internet companies. Amazon, Eddie Bauer, Sharper Image, Brookstone etc are all there. They include things like free shipping, 10% off, free gifts etc. They usually ask for promotional codes when you place your order. Just look them up at these two sites before you order! (thanks to Dennis Dingley)
Well, exclusive to United Employees anyhow. (What, did you think that WE could bring you some kind of discount? AOL would just LAUGH at US!) David Atlas sent this link from Skynet to us, and we're passing it on to you. It is found on Skynet under "Employee Discounts."
<from Skynet> United and AOL Time Warner are pleased to offer United employees AOL internet service at a significant discount! These special accounts created for United employees provide access to all of the benefits of AOL: massive content, internet and email access anywhere in the world, AOL's parental control features, and up to seven screen names per account. And, depending on the account you sign-up for, access to Apollo and Unimatic are included. PLEASE NOTE: You must have special authorization from your supervisor to access unimatic from home. If you have a valid business need to access Unimatic from home, contact your supervisor.
There are five different plans - the basic "Partners" plan (that does NOT include access to Unimatic and Apollo) that costs only $8.33/month - and four additional plans (which include access to Unimatic and Apollo) that cost between $9.95/mo. and $29.95/mo. And, for a limited time only, monthly service is FREE! So sign-up today!
If you're having trouble remembering the url to SkyNet is https://united.intranet.ual.com/ (after all, it IS intuitive, right?), we at PilotsUnited.com have just made life easier for you. For a whopping $15, we registered www.UnitedSkynet.com and point it directly at SkyNet. Now all you have to remember is www.UnitedSkynet.com when you're at your girlfriend's house and you need to use WebList to list your wife and kid on the flight home.
Now who says you can't get nutin' for free? In addition to providing you with the new link to SkyNet, PilotsUnited.com doesn't charge a fee, we don't have annoying pop-up ads, and we are occasionally funny (lookin'), so why aren't you passing on PilotsUnited.com to your friends? Who's your buddy, who's your pal? If you told just one friend a week, you could inform all 10,000 pilots (including our furloughed comrades) in about 9,999 weeks (don't count yourself), so by the year 2202 you could spread the word to each and every pilot here (I am aware that 9,999 weeks is just over 192 years, but you could take off a few years like 2067 and 2105 for vacation). You had better get crackin'.
Keep an eye on UAL in the news at Yahoo!: UAL or Airliners.net
Okay, thanks to Vinny DeGiovanni and Cullen Bankole, one of the coolest things about our site so far is for us to pass on the link that allows you to get Unimatic access from your browser, away from CSIM, away from AOL, away from
any bid package, away from My SkyNet. PLEASE REALIZE that we at PilotsUnited.com know ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about how to get it to work or how to troubleshoot it. . Click here to get the basics on how to use this link. Again, other than what appears at that link, we know nothing about how to tweak your system. If you encounter any problems AND COME UP WITH A SOLUTION, please pass it on and we'll include it in the FAQ for others to benefit.
When you access Unimatic ths way (instead of through Cullen's or Scott's excellent software packages, which I totally recommend you getting one or the other), you will have to click on the button that says, "CLICK HERE to proceed to Unimatic/Apollo." It will remain inactive (grayed out) until access is avaialble, at which time the letters will turn black.
A question was asked: Can there be a button in Internet Explorer (IE) that I just click and get Unimatic Access. The answer is yes. I'll give you two ways to do it. Before you do anything, you'll need to make sure your Links toolbar is in view. Go to View >> Toobars >> Links (if it has a check mark next to it, it's already displayed and you don't want to select it.) The easiest way is to point to this link to Unimatic. Click and drag the link and drop it right onto your Links toobar. Done.
If for some reason that doesn't work, or it doesn't compute, you can try this. Point to this link to Unimatic. Right click and "Copy Shortcut." Go to your desktop, right click, and "Paste Shortcut." Open IE, and resize the IE browser window so you can get to your desktop. Click and drag the shortcut icon to wherever you want on your Links toolbar in IE and you're done. (Why you would be able to do this and not the first technique fails me, but I might as well put it up there. Maybe some pilot that was a former loadmaster will like going in the back way better.)
Don't forget that when you access Unimatic ths way (instead of through Cullen's or Scott's excellent software packages, which I totally recommend you getting one or the other), you will have to click on the button that says, "CLICK HERE to proceed to Unimatic/Apollo." It will remain inactive (grayed out) until access is avaialble, at which time the letters will turn black.
SkyNet: PDF Fix for Internet Explorer
{re: SkyNet} A recent software change has caused problems with displaying or downloading Adobe Acrobat (pdf) files for users using Internet Explorer running under the Windows operating system. At present, it appears to only be a problem for Windows users, and not for Macintosh users. Windows users should take the following steps to make sure your browser can access pdf files:
-
Start Internet Explorer
-
Go to the Internet Explorer "Tools" menu
-
Select Internet Options...
-
Select Advanced tab
-
Scroll down to Security
-
Check the Do not save encrypted pages to disk option, then click Apply (if the box is already checked, there is nothing you need to do)
-
Restart Internet Explorer
If you have any difficulties with the steps above, please contact david.l.kleckner@ual.com
Another issue we've encountered previously with pdf files: If you are using Adobe Acrobat Reader version 3.01, you should upgrade to version 4 or 5. Go to the Skynet homepage, click on Software Downloads and follow the instructions.
You can OFFICIALLY cast your vote for important items on ALPA's OFFICIAL Internet Voting Website. I am unable to keep track of all the issues being voted on in each of the councils, but I do know that Council 57 (LAX) has an active ballot. You can always vote by phone at 800-647-1787.
Remember, no whining if you don't vote! And before anyone asks: NO, we at PilotsUnited.com CAN'T see how you vote. As always, this is JUST A LINK and we can't track what you do from here.
David Culp of ORDFO created a few icons to use. There is an ALPA icon, a UAL logo, and a PilotsUnited icon as well. To use them, click on one of the links. Put the cursor over the icon, right click, and save them to your hard drive. On your desktop, right click on whatever application or shortcut you want to assign the new icon to, click on "Change Icon", navigate to wherever you saved it on your hard drive (please don't email me asking where YOU saved it on your hard drive. Send all questions of this type to carnacthemagnificent@worldofkreskin.com) and you're done.
So much STUFF comes across our front page, and we don't want to let it go. We've moved some of the more enduring highlights from our front page to our "Top 10" page. Check out some of the more fun, interesting, and useful tidbits that have appeared on our site.
Hold your horses, Rescue Ranger, we still have your stock ticker for you, you're just gonna have to bookmark a different page. A LOT of people didn't like the fact that the very first time you came to www.pilotsunited.com, you had to either install some software (Warning, warning, danger Will Robinson!) or you had to say you didn't want to download it...every single time you returned to the page. But we wanted to keep the ticker (I really like it, by the way.) So we made a comprimise: We moved the ticker to the new Pilots United ULTRA version. We now offer so many versions of PilotsUnited.com, I have a hard time keeping track!
PilotsUnited.com
The main home page. All the graphics, no Ticker. (Default)
PilotsUnited.com Ultra
All the bells and whistles, including the Ticker. (Recommended)
PilotsUnited.com Lite
Minimal graphics, one bell, no whistles, but the full menu system.
PilotsUnited.com Free
Lame link list for gerbil-powered 9600 baud Hayes modems.
Whew. I can't wait for the next whiny complaint that will cause yet another variant of PilotsUnited.com, but you know there will be one! If you want your ticker back, just go to http://www.pilotsunited.com/ultra and click on the "Make PilotsUnited.com Ultra My Home Page" link, or go to Ultra, then select "Tools" -> "Internet Options.." and click on "Use Current."
Want to help us out? It won't cost you a dime! All you need to do is click on this link, print out a few copies of the page that pops up, and post it in your domicile. Being West Coast, it's highly unlikely I'll see DCAFO or MIAFO, and it would be nice to let the East Coasters in on PilotsUnited.com. Even if you have seen one in your domicile, print a few copies out and replace the old ones in ops so that people have the url tabs to pull off. Thanks!
By the way, who ever it was that posted the flier in ORD ops, THANKS! You wouldn't believe how many people have been writing telling us that THAT is where they found out about the site!
We're so lonely, we are begging for you to email us. Actually, all I really want to know is how people are finding us. The ALPA Forum is probably our #1 resource, but I have put up some posters in some of the domiciles, and I would like to know if they are getting the message across. Also, I'm interested to see if word-of-mouth/email is working for us. So if you would please just take the brief time to click on this link to seanbrown@pilotsunited.com and lemme know how you found us, I'd really appreciate it.
We are still offering this free service to United pilots. Click
here to request your name with this cool email address.
What is your favorite Movie? Actor? Book? Band?
At Listology.com, you can post your favorite...anything. Who are the Best Villians of all time? (Darth Vader or Hannibal Lecter?) What actress stinks so bad, they should take her out to a field, tie her to an ant hill, pour honey all over her...but I digress (Julia Roberts). It's free to view, free to participate, and free to be you and me. I'm Infomaniac listed in the Member Directory and Hall of Fame.

Pilots Vote down TA 68.2% to 31.8%
With a Special MEC Update for Friday, April 20, 2007 at 11:30 a.m.
Central Daylight time, this is MEC Communications Chairman Steve
Derebey
A substantial majority of pilots voting on the Line Guarantee and
LCO Pay RIG Tentative Agreement have rejected the proposal. Of the
6473 eligible active pilots, 5733 pilots (88.57%) participated in
this ballot. 3909 (68.18%) voted AGAINST the TA and 1824 (31.82%)
voted in FAVOR. Two ballots were cast in which the voter did not
select any options.
The message you've sent is clear: While contractual improvements
are critical, you are through providing this management relief in
any way, shape or form. They have previously stated that they “have
all the tools necessary” to create a profitable enterprise.
Management must face the reality that the pilots of United are through
subsidizing failed decision-making. Your vote states loud and clear
that you are angry at the excessive “compensation packages”
awarded to those who claim to have a cogent plan to manage the company
outside the bankruptcy environment.
We will enlighten the American public regarding your anger at “shared
sacrifice” not translating into shared rewards. Like our colleagues
at other airlines, we will turn the focus toward redirecting the
flow of revenue from the corporate suite back to those of us who
make this airline fly.
Now that the pilots have spoken regarding the Tentative Agreement,
we must focus on the next phase of the United MEC's Fix It Now!
(FIN) campaign. You have sent the first strong signal, but many
steps remain in the FIN process, designed to reclaim what was extracted
from us during United's bankruptcy. Your continued participation
is key to securing meaningful achievements well in advance of the
upcoming Section 6 negotiations with the Company.
SHAME ON GLENN TILTON: $39,700,000 IN 2006!
In a proxy statement filed Monday to the Security and Exchange
Commission, United Airlines revealed that UAL chairman, chief executive
and president Glenn Tilton received compensation worth $39.7
million in 2006. According to an Association Press story,
the lion's share of Tilton's remuneration came in the form of stock
and option awards granted in February 2006, including an award United
valued at $20 million when it was issued Feb. 2, one day after UAL
emerged from court-protected bankruptcy.
After United’s emergence from bankruptcy, Tilton
received subsequent awards worth about $18 million over the next
four weeks. He was paid a base salary of $687,083, received
$839,028 in non-equity incentive plan compensation and was granted
other compensation of $210,959.
Tilton’s bonuses, salary and stock options all came as United’s
unionized employees continue laboring under working agreements and
wages implemented during United’s bankruptcy. In response
to United’s filing, the Union Coalition at United Airlines,
which is comprised of an overwhelming majority of unionized United
employees, issued the following press release to all major news
outlets across the United States:
-------
UAL Union Coalition Demands Shared Rewards
Chicago, Ill., March 27, 2007--Angered that management has been
enriching itself in the face of life-changing sacrifices made on
the part of workers at United Airlines, the majority of United’s
unionized employees have formed the “Union Coalition at United
Airlines” to demand our fair share in the financial rewards
that management currently enjoys. Because of the sacrifices and
efforts of United’s employees, United Airlines avoided liquidation
during its three-year bankruptcy.
The union leaders call on management to, among other issues, make
immediate, tangible improvements to the compensation and success
sharing program for all employees, address quality of work-life
issues, and move up Contract bargaining dates.
“The employees of United Airlines are inexorably linked to
the future and success of our airline,” said the Coalition
in a statement signed by Greg Davidowich of the Association of Flight
Attendants (AFA-CWA), Lou Lucivero of the International Federation
of Professional and Technical Engineers (IFPTE), Jim Seitz of the
Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA), Craig Symons of
the Professional Airline Flight Control Association (PAFCA) and
Mark Bathurst of the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA).
“Throughout United’s bankruptcy, ‘shared sacrifice’
was the mantra employees heard frequently from upper management.
But executives have failed to lead by example as employees have
watched these same individuals collect millions of dollars worth
of stock, pay raises and bonuses. On Monday, the full extent of
upper management’s 2006 profit package was revealed in the
Proxy Statement filed by United. Unionized employees are outraged.
Management continues lining its pockets with millions of dollars
while its employees still struggle under the same working agreements
and wages implemented during United’s bankruptcy. Clearly,
United management values the concept of ‘sharing’ as
a public relations tactic to extract billions of dollars in concessions
rather than a principle by which they should live and manage. United’s
employees don’t subscribe to management’s philosophy
that sharing ends at the sacrifice stage.”
Through concessions, nearly $5.5 billion was extracted from labor
during United’s stay in bankruptcy.
“The dedication, sweat and sacrifice of all United employees
have led United Airlines on the road toward sustained profitability,”
the union leaders say. “Management already is reaping the
rewards of United’s new found financial health. It is time
the efforts of the airline’s most important stakeholders –
the employees – are recognized and respected. Shared sacrifice
should equal shared rewards.
“It is not unreasonable to demand our fair share in the financial
rewards that management currently enjoys. Standing together and
speaking with one voice, United Airlines’ unionized employees
will work aggressively to force management to recognize our part
in transforming our airline.”
Combined, the coalition’s five labor unions represent more
than 30,000 United employees.

FIN: Fix It Now!
Here are links to the streaming video of the United MEC "Fix
It NOW" Rally held on Friday, January 26th at the O'Hare Hilton
in Chicago. The first link (High
Bandwidth) is for High Speed Internet users and the second (Low
Bandwidth) is for "Dial-up" users.
In the next few weeks the UAL MEC will be sending you a DVD of
the event, along with several special features not contained in
this streaming version. They want to thank the more than 400 pilots
who attended this event in Chicago to officially kick off the "Fix

Link to the NEW ALPA Forum
I went to the old ALPA forum to find it had disappeared. Oly Olson
gave new link:
http://ualmec.com
and for help
http://webhelp.ualmec.com/
There is an excellently produced tutorial on the help
page that walks you step-by-step through registering. You'll need
to know the email address you have on file with the UAL ALPA MEC.
A direct link to the tutorial is http://tutorials.ualmec.com.
The forum links in both the side and top menus of this site have
been updated.
The new forum format is awesome, by the way. The content
generated by the members is still the same (25% good info, 25% camaraderie,
25% humor, senseless and otherwise, and 25% UFC-style brawling.)
As usual, the volunteer Sysops are doing a bang up job containing
the inmates at the asylum. See you at Boyle's!

PBS (Preferential Bidding System) Direct Link
Here's a direct link to the PBS. Use the same login as your www.UnitedSkynet.com
link (your standard Skynet login). As I type this, Skynet My
Workplace is unavailable, but this link bypasses it so you can still
bid before they close.
https://united.intranet.ual.com/pbs-pilot
By the way, years ago I registered www.UnitedSkynet.com
and www.UnitedUnimatic.com.
When I came back from my leave of absence, I forwrded www.UnitedSkynet.com
to the long url, so now you can just type in www.UnitedSkynet.com
and it takes you there. I recently forwarded www.UnitedUnimatic.com
to the Unimatic link, so in the next week or so you'll be able to
do the same for Unimatic. I just registered www.UnitedPBS.com
and forwarded it to the link posted above and it is already
working. I can understand why the company wouldn't just do this
themselves, as it's 3 x $7.95 that could go to more important things
like retirement funds, bonuses, and raises for C-Level managment.
Cheers from Sean Brown and PilotsUnited.com!
Awesome Resource and Website: AirlinePilotCentral.com
Check out this website that Scott O'Brien just sent to me. Want
to know what we're making? Take a look at http://airlinepilotcentral.com/airlines/legacy/united.html.
Now go take a look at what FedEx is making at http://airlinepilotcentral.com/airlines/cargo/fedex.html.
But don't pay no mind, as we all know that you can't make money
in cargo. The rest of the site is a very well put together resource
that is worth your browsing time.
Skype a must for International Pilots!
Returning to the line, I needed to figure out a reasonably
inexpensive way to call home from Narita, Sydney, Bangkok, and Frankfurt.
I guess FREE is inexpensive enough. Skype is exceptionally easy
to install and just as easy to get started. All you need is a microphone
and headphones (I bought a combined headset for $19 at BestBuy...
there's nothing really special about them.)
What is even cooler is that when I was on my last
trip with John Salvini, he had Skype and a webcam, and when he called
me, I could see him in very good resolution on the screen! So when
I'm away, if I install Skype on my son's computer and then call
him from Bangkok, I can show him the view from my room and have
a great face-to-face conversation with him.
I have written an extensive article on "How
to get Started with Skype." Check
it out for details on how to completely revolutionize the way
you communicate on your trips.
For an innovative way to show your spirit or support, check out
www.UniformSpirit.com.
You know how some pilots wear ties that have the American Flag on
them, or they wear the Christmas or St. Patrick's Day ties? Think
this, but for your uniform epaulettes.
Get a Sneak Peek at your Next Month's Line
Want to have a peek at what your line is likely going to be but
don't want to wait until they load them into Unimatic? Well, you
can. I was flying with John Salvini and he told me about a neat
trick. Sign into the PBS system (either through www.UnitedSkynet.com
or go directly via www.UnitedPBS.com.)
Once in the PBS system, go to the "Reports" menu and select
"Single Line Reports" and then select the month that just
closed.
You would use this trick between the time the bids close and the
time they are posted in Unimatic. I just went to look for mine on
December 18th and it's there (Yahoo, I got the HDOs that I wanted
while on Reserve), but it is still not in Unimatic and I suspect
they won't be there unitl the 20th.
I don't know how accurate it is. In other words, I don't know if
this is just a holding place for them trying to work things out
so it's subject to change or if it is really the real deal, but
at least you get a good idea of what your'e getting. Someone from
the System Scheduling committe could email me a clarification if
they wanted.

When you see a Pilot... they're not getting paid!
This was forwarded to me by Scott O'Brien. We're not sure who wrote
this, but it is definitely very, very true.
Great, another "over paid airline pilot" article. Do you
know that when you see a pilot, he's not being paid?
-
When you see a pilot going through the same security you go
through, he's not being paid.
-
When you see a pilot walking in the terminal, he's not being
paid.
-
When you see a pilot at the gate pulling up paper work, planning
the flight, and conferring with the agent, he's not being paid.
-
When you see a pilot walking around the aircraft doing a preflight
inspection, he's not being paid.
-
When you board the aircraft and look in the cockpit and see
the pilots setting up the aircraft, they're not getting paid.
-
When you land safely at your destination and walk off the
aircraft and see the pilots shutting down the aircraft, they're
not being paid.
-
When you see a pilot waiting for a ride to a hotel for the
night, he's not being paid.
-
The only time the pilot of your aircraft is getting paid is
when you DON"T see him... when he's locked behind the cockpit
door as you push back from the gate. Every thing else he does
until this point is for free. For no wages. Nothing!
-
The average airline pilot is at work for 12- 14 hours per day,
yet gets paid for less than 6 - 7 hours.
-
The average airline pilot is away from home, at work, for 70+
hours a week, yet gets paid for only 15 to 18 hours per weeks
work.
-
Most pilots schedules have them working 15 days or more a month...
that means they are not at home half the month.
-
Holidays, weekends, birthdays, anniversaries, summer vacations....
not at home.
-
A majority of pilots have 4 year college degrees, or more.
Then they begin training as pilots.
-
A large majority of Pilots have spent 8 years or more flying
in the military, risking their lives and protecting your freedom
for wages most of you wouldn't accept in the civilian world.
-
Civilian trained pilots have spent $50,000 or more to acquire
the training that qualifies them for a Regional Airline job, which
pays a wage less than the poverty level in most western countries.
-
Most pilots do not attain the required experience level to
be hired by a major airline until they are well passed the age
of 30. The average age of a new hire airline pilot is 32.
-
Until recently, airline pilots were required to retire at the
age of 60. This gave most of them less than 28 years to maximize
their income and fund their pensions, hoping that greedy airline
execs won't steal it. Today, they still have to worry about the
greedy execs.
-
Airline pilots are subject to random drug and alcohol testing,
any time they are at work. Fail it and they lose their job.
-
Airline pilots are required to undergo rigorous re-training
and certification every 6 to 9 months, at which time they could
fail and lose their jobs, licenses and livelihood.
-
Airline pilots are required to submit to random government
"Line checks" during which their license could be revoked
and livelihood destroyed.
-
Airline pilots are exposed to radiation levels far exceeding
the normal safe radiation limits mandated by the FDA.
-
Airline pilots are required to submit to a government medical
examination every 6 months (Captains) and 12 months as First Officers.
Year after year. Fail that, and their career is over.
-
How many of you go to work where people try to kill you? How
many of you have had your office turned into a cruise missile?
How many of you work behind a bullet proof door?
-
How many of you are responsible for the lives of 200- 300 people,
with any small mistake in your performance resulting in the death
of your customers (and yourselves), and the financial destruction
of your company?
-
How many of your jobs require you to fight your way through
thunderstorms, rain, snow, ice and turbulence, day and night,
year after year? No mistakes allowed? The excuse " I had
a bad day at work" never accepted?
-
Many pilots volunteer (on their own time and own dime) to be
trained as Federal Flight Deck Officers, and carry weapons to
defend their aircraft, crew and passengers. They maintain their
proficiency and qualifications twice a year on their own time
and money.
-
How many of you go to work where you are searched, patted down
and your personal items scrutinized by strangers, even though
you can kill everyone in your place of work with your two bare
hands?
-
Airline pilot pay scales and hours worked are usually posted
by absurdly overcompensated Airline Exec's who are waging a PR
campaign against their Pilot Unions and trying to justify their
own greedy bonus's and draconian wage and pension cuts. Cheap
ass airline passengers just love this shit since they don't care
if their airplane is flown by the lowest denominator, as long
as they can fly for next to nothing. Course if they don't get
to their destination, their next of kin can sue....

Crashman's Crashing Collages
These collages are extremely well done. Crashman has a knack for
finding an incredible broad range of footage and combines it with
some really good music. Clips in the two left columns are pretty
much crash footage while the right column clips are a bit diffrent
including combat footage. Each runs 4-8 minutes.

Our Dysfunctional Political Machine
Most of you that know me know that I'm pretty apolitical.
I'm not Republican nor Democrat, Conservative nor Liberal. I do lean
a bit to the left (and I think Joel leans a bit to the right, but
I think that was more of an issue with his cobbler). Frankly, my political
beliefs are that all politicians are corrupt and I don't know who
to trust. While I'd love to vote for the Stewart-Colbert ticket, if
Richard Clarke would run I'd vote for him for sure.
Now before my inbox is barraged lambasting me as un-American,
realize that I do believe that this country is as good as it gets.
I don't feel the government per-se is dysfunctional. It is the politics
behind our government that I feel is way out of whack.
That said, there are several media outlets that highlight
the dysfunctional political machine that hamstrings us. Most of these
tend to lean far to one side or the other. Admittedly, most of the
better zingers come from the left, but that is because the Conservatives/Republicans
have been in control for the last six years. Now that the Democrats
control Congress, we will certainly see more contradictory and hypocritical
material come from them. Too, FOX is coming up with an answer to Jon
Stewart's Daily Show which should (fair and) balance out the playing
field.
Below are a few clips from YouTube that, I hope, make
you scratch your head. BY ALL MEANS, if you are frustrated with the
clips you see and think they are unfair, ANSWER THEM BY FINDING A
CLIP THAT SUPPORTS YOUR SIDE and I can post it here along side the
others. I'm not building a section to support one side or the other,
I'm just hoping to expose a few of you to just how crazy things have
gotten.
I'm looking for clips that show how politics is screwing
up our government, so please don't send links of compilations that
make talking heads like Bill O'Reilly or Keith Olbermann look like
complete idiots... now if you can find something showing how politicians
like Hillary Clinton or John McCain are hypocritical, that's something
else. O'Reilly and Michael Moore debating the Conservative vs. Liberal
sides, okay. Olbermann compiling a long list of O'Reilly saying "Shut
Up", no.
If you REALLY want to enlighten yourself, I strongly
encourage you to read "Against All Enemies" by Richard Clarke,
the former "Terrorist Czar" (a title he hated). It connects
the dots on a LOT of the disruptive activity over the last two decades.
It's not a comforting read, but it does show that the terrorist acts
that have been occurring are not random and therefore it
is possibly a diffuseable situation.

Beware the Crew Desk and Pay Desk when Deviating!!!
I have recently been hosed on getting paid on 13:57
of pay when I deviated on a trip. I'm sure that after I struggle
through the process of getting it rectified, a total PITA mind
you, I'll get paid properly. The main point is, however, that
NO ONE IS LOOKING OUT FOR YOU AND THE SYSTEM IS NOT AS AUTOMATIC
AS YOU MIGHT WANT TO BELIEVE.
I have been pretty complacent about Unimatic and
flight times. I have always been reliant upon ACARS reporting
the times and it coming all together in Unimatic and me getting
paid for what I fly. I found it tedious to have to follow up on
every flight making sure that I was being paid correctly... hell,
it's all computerized, why SHOULDN'T it work out exactly right?
WRONG. WRONG!
I flew an 8 day AMC mission that flew over the month
end. I was assigned it on reserve. It had a DH from LAX-FRA on
the front (in November) and a DH from FRA-LAX on the end (December
1). I was okay'd to deviate by the Crew Desk, who had to AUTHORIZE
the Positive Space travel. I figured this was proof enough that
I was authorized to deviate, otherwise, why would the crew desk
authorize positive space company travel? WRONG. WRONG!!! To compound
matters, my deviating DH flights were on November 30, not December
1. While this isn't the crux of the matter, it did not help matters.
A few days later I checked my CALREC for November
and noticed that the DH time didn't show up in November. Okay,
I thought, it was scheduled to appear in December, they wanted
it to appear in December (although it would have been nice to
receive the 13:57 in November as they had already flown me 70:51).
That's cool, but it did not appear in December. As a matter of
fact, the Pay Desk had shown the trip being cut short by a day,
so they had me on RESERVE on December 1!
I called the Crew Desk who handed me off to the
Pay Desk. The Pay Desk said that it was the Crew Desk's fault
because they didn't a) put "OK to DV8" in the ID and
b) did not put the deviating flight numbers and times IN THE ID.
So they just showed NOTHING... not the original time nor the deviating
time, it just went away.
Obviously furious, I had to contact the Crew Desk
to get them to modify the ID to reflect both requirements. They
did so reasonably willingly. The Crew Desk then had to SEND A
METER to the Pay Desk so they would update the times. Frankly,
as of 12/11/06, I HAVE NOT YET SEEN THE TIME in either December
OR November. Again, I'm sure it will finally show up, but only
AFTER I MAKE THEM DO IT. (Update: The pay desk called me on 12/12/06
and said that this time shows up in my PAYREC/FN, but it won't
show up in my CALREC/FN. Not that I can really read my PAYREC,
but at least it is showing up in December. 13:07 instead of 13:57,
but hey, at least I got 94% of the time!)
LESSON 1: No one cares about your pay rec being
right but you. If there is an error on the company's behalf, THEY
DON'T CARE AND YOU MUST FIGHT TO RECTIFY IT YOURSELF. Certainly,
if the error is that you're getting paid too much, they will swiftly
and unilaterally change it themselves, but NOT if the error is
in YOUR favor.
What is most frustrating is that I am not the first
person to ever deviate at United. As a matter of fact, I would
suspect that there are SEVERAL DEVIATIONS A DAY. So why isn't
the Crew Desk up to speed on this, if it affects our pay so considerably?
The real answer, of course, is that it would benefit the company
if the Crew Desk was NOT educated. Think of all the money they
could save by having the pilots believe that the computer system
has integrity (let alone management having any integrity).
LESSON 2: If you deviate, you MUST hold the Crew
Desk's hand and MAKE SURE that they put "OK to DV8"
in the ID AND the Flight Numbers and Times in the ID as well.
If not, you WILL NOT GET PAID.
I HATE the idea of having to step-by-step the crew
desk through this, as I know that many of the scheduler will KNOW
what to do and will resent me telling them how to do their job.
But as it has almost cost me 14 hours of pay, I don't really give
a rat's butt about that at all. Until the Crew Desk can get their
game up to speed, we will need to treat all of them as if they
don't know the job that UNITED SHOULD HAVE TRAINED THEM TO DO.
I don't think that the scheduler's themselves are at fault, it's
managements inept training, and I would suspect INTENTIONAL inept
training, that leaves the scheduler's unprepared. That said, THEY
are the only ones that can make the ID show up properly, so THEY
are the ones we have to direct on how to do their job.
All I can say is: DO NOT TRUST THE COMPANY WHEN
IT COMES TO YOUR PAY. At the very least, you need to follow up
when ANYTHING is different than scheduled. I know it's a pain,
but your only alternative is to fly free for Uncle Glenn and the
Bonus Gang. It's your choice. Now I'm off to call the Pay Desk
again.
Cheers,
Sean
Now here's a great idea. Someone (Mark
Lambert) created a sited that allows all of us pilots to link
together to do business with each other. It's basically PB2PB
(Pilot Business to Pilot Business). The site is being built to
allow pilots to seek out businesses run or owned by other pilots.
After all, if the product is the same (or better) and the price
is the same (or better) why not choose the business owned
by another pilot? The site address is appropriately www.PilotsHelpingPilots.com.
Check it out and get Mark to add your business to the list!
Whew, we're getting so many lists (all of 4) that we had
to make a list of our lists. We call it, er, the PilotsUnited.com
List of Lists. And no, "Things You'd Do With Goodwin's Head if
it Were Separated From His Body" is not one of the lists. The latest
two are the "LAS Commuters" and the "Aero Medical Examiners"
lists. Go to the List of
List page for both the lists and the method to get your data on the
lists.
